Since it is part of the Gangotri National Park there are chances of encountering snow leopard, brown bear, blue sheep and palearctic birdlife.
This is the best way of acclimatization before we proceed on the Gangotri Tapovan trek.
The trail initially winds through primeval Himalayan cedar Forest that gives way to more of precipitous cliff and rocky setting along the boisterous Bhagirathi River. Sudarshan Peak (21342 feet) stays in the view for most of it. After 4-5 hours’ gentle walk, we reach to the campsite at Chirbasa where blue pine and birch forest have strong rooting. Overnight in the luxury of Himalayan Peregrinators’ camp set by supporting team. If you are energetic enough, after high tea and relaxing a bit, we can delight ourselves with some birding around the camp before the dusk
Slowly we leave treeline behind as we proceed towards Bhojbasa, the valley gets wider although juniper bushes keep us accompanied till Gaumukh. Expect to see alpine birds, herds of Bharal or blue sheep can be seen grazing on the mountain slopes on the way and if luck prevails, we might see grey ghost (Snow leopard) stalking them on precipitous slope. Brown bear also make this altitude its home.
Although we walk a shorter distance today, but it is important from the acclimatization point of view. We have option to walk up to the Gaumukh glacier to look for blue sheep and alpine birds. Overnight at Bhojbasa
Most challenging day on the trek as we start climbing to the Tapovan that is steep and arduous. The altitude can be felt with the thin oxygen level. Opportunity to challenge yourself and test your limit
After high tea, we explore the surrounding of Tapovan by taking a walk around the sprawling grassland with both sides view is dominated by sky torpedoing peaks overlooking at our camp. The trail leading to the two weeks long trek to Satopant – Badrinath can be seen from here. If you really want to experience the Himalaya and take 14 days’ challenge this is one trek that will test your limit.
An early wake up is recommended to feast your senses with the rosy alpenglow of sunrise on the towering snowy peaks of Shivling, Meru and Bhagirathi group, as well as to inhale crisp morning air of the mountains. We bid farewell to the beautiful surrounding after breakfast and start reversing our journey back to Bhojbasa. Overnight at the camp
